Chess - 3d
Today's project is one I physically made myself, though I used two publicly available designs (links in the text).
In short: I made myself a chess set and I'm showing it off :)
I had a break from playing for over a decade, but recently got back into it and decided it was worth having a nice, physical set.
Pieces
The piece design comes from Thingiverse: link
It wasn't my first choice — an earlier set I'd picked unfortunately didn't come out well detail-wise on my printer (Snapmaker 2 T350).
These turned out significantly better.
I really love some of the details, especially the rook — it even has a staircase inside :)
The print quality for the pieces was the highest I could achieve — 0.08 mm layer height with a 0.4 mm nozzle.
Chessboard
The chessboard design comes from MakerWorld: link
It consists of four panels onto which the squares in the appropriate colors snap into place. The panels themselves connect to each other using magnets.
I particularly liked the ability to fold everything into a cube that serves as a storage box — especially since I suspect this won't be my last set of pieces :)
Unfortunately my printer has been acting up a bit lately and sometimes slips on the filament, so the last print of the frame came out incomplete.
For the squares and structural elements I decided there was no point in fine-tuning the quality as much as with the pieces, so they were printed using the Fast Print setting with a 0.4 mm nozzle. I've even started printing the frame itself with a 0.8 mm nozzle.
Materials
The gold and black-and-gold filament is PLA by Professional Lab.
Additionally, I lacquered the board elements with acrylic spray varnish, which gives the surface a nice shine. The material itself is "Silk", but the flat surfaces had to be printed directly on the bed, so the contact areas naturally came out matte at first.
